Creating (In) A Team

Creating in a team can be complicated, especially if team members don’t agree to the direction of a particular element of the process. I’ve worked in a number of team situations, and in different positions within teams. One of the biggest complaints I hear about the creative team process is when members ideas are not used. Being a team member, does not mean the creative idea you come up with will be chosen, however, to work well and really enjoy the process you need to be willing to constantly offer up ideas. And that is all it is – just…

Stepping through ikigai towards Invincible Summer

My dear, In the midst of hate, I found there was, within me, an invincible love. In the midst of tears, I found there was, within me, an invincible smile. In the midst of chaos, I found there was, within me, an invincible calm. I realized, through it all, that… In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer. And that makes me happy. For it says that no matter how hard the world pushes against me, within me, there’s something stronger – something better, pushing right back. Falsely yours Albert Camus: The Myth of…

Consumerism vs Creativity

Nicki Lisa Cole, in her article, What does Consumerism Mean, states: While consumption is an activity people engage in, sociologists understand consumerism to be a powerful ideology characteristic of Western society that frames our worldview, values, relationships, identities, and behaviour. Consumer culture drives us to seek happiness and fulfilment through mindless consumption and serves as a necessary component of capitalist society, which demands mass production and unending sales growth. Most people would agree with this definition of consumerism and how it fits within a capitalist society. What may upset some is the phrase, ‘mindless consumption’, because while we like to…

The Mind needs to Create

Have you ever watched children play with Lego? Their minds are open to endless possibilities for what these square and rectangle primary colored blocks could become. It could be a skate-park, a moon-base, a sports stadium… whatever it is, their mind has travelled further than the limitations of those blocks. Their imaginations have filled in gaps, fixed potential failures and pushed the scope of Lego to ‘infinity and beyond’. When I’m teaching filmmaking to students, most, when they first arrive, want to know how exactly it is done. They want the steps, the process from A to B to Z…

7 days to get Creative

Monday Well, seven days of creativity have started. I wrote a poem today, not a great poem, just a poem. I made the task easier for myself as I decided to write it for someone, so that helped my motivation. It’s for my partner’s mother, as her birthday is coming up, so I will write it in her card. It was a really cute activity, and only took about 15 minutes in my lunch-break – I kinda feel happy about it – more than I expected. Not sure if this excitement is more to do with the whole week, or…

Without Photoshop

The last 4 weeks I have regularly uploaded my newly formed blog. All excitement! But then week 5 hit, and lacking in energy, stressed by work, time-poor, (all the things) – I thought possibly I wouldn’t get there. Nothing on my list of possible subjects jumped out at me. My week ahead was already full. I just sat at my desk immobilised at thought of making a decision. And, I guess it was this situation that gave me the idea for this post. Life is a strange thing, and we seem to live in very strange times. I, like most…

Life as Art

‘Life as Art’ – it is a statement we hear and see in social media a lot, but, what does that even mean? How can life be art? My life does not seem like art, (AT ALL)! Even if I tried, I don’t think my life could be art, or maybe I’m missing something- I guess I need to start by having a definition of ‘art’ that reflects life lived. So, what is art? I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. Here is an example of this statement discussed, which goes to show some genuine thoughts but also some…
